Elecs fourth in Swift Current

The Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS) Elecs senior boys' basketball team had a 2-1 record, and finished fourth, at a tournament in Swift Current January 17 and 18.

Estevan opened the tournament against the Moose Jaw Vanier Vikings. The Elecs trailed 37-31 at half-time, and wound up losing 88-49.

Coach Shane Ross said his team ran out of gas against a much bigger Moose Jaw squad.

The next game was a 97-85 victory over Herbert. Vince Dela Pena, who missed much of the year because he was in the Philippines, set a tournament record with 49 points.

The previous single-game benchmark was 47 points.

“He wasn't hogging the ball or missing teammates; he must have had eight assists in the game, too,” coach Shane Ross said.

ECS finished the tournament by beating Shaunavon 77-61. Dallas Dowhanuik was named Estevan's game MVP, thanks to his consistent play, Ross said.

Up next for ECS will be the Esterhazy tournament from February 7 to 9.
