Foundation announces date for fundraiser

The St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation has announced that its annual Radiothon for Life fundraiser will take place on Wednesday, March 19.

The 12-hour event will begin at 6 a.m. and it will emanate from the hospital's atrium. Golden West Radio's stations in Estevan will be broadcasting the event.

The goal for this year is $40,000, said foundation executive director Becky Conly. Last year's event generated more than $38,000.

Conly said they haven't selected a capital item that will receive funds through the radiothon, but proceeds from the broadcast will be directed towards the lengthy wish list of capital equipment needed at the hospital.

“It's everything from room upgrades to maintenance of the hospital to upgrading different areas and pieces of equipment,” said Conly.

They decided to have the radiothon in the hospital to attract more people into the building, and to allow supporters to see all that the foundation has accomplished for the hospital.

“It's exciting that we're doing it here in the hospital, and the staff and the patients will be really excited about it as well,” said Conly.

Also new for this year will be a Face of the Radiothon. The first person chosen for the honour is Shaya Daae, the five-year-old daughter of Shannon and Michael Daae. Shaya was born more than two months prematurely in February of 2008. It was through the efforts of doctors that Shaya and Shannon survived, Conly said.

“We're focusing on stories and people that have been touched, and lives that have been saved here at the St. Joseph's Hospital,” said Conly.

Conly said they have already started to approach businesses and schools about fundraisers for the event. They have spoken to local grocery stores about selling cardboard cutout hearts to raise money. And the foundation is broaching businesses with other ways that they can fundraise.

Conly said they will have local celebrities answering the phones and helping out during the broadcast, but they will need volunteers to help out in a variety of capacities to ensure that the fundraiser is a success.
