Durr's hockey photography on display

Local photographer Jennifer Durr stands next to one of her hockey photographs that are part of her exhibit Hockey in a Small City.

Jennifer Durr's abilities as a hockey photographer have earned her an exhibit at the Estevan Art Gallery and Museum (EAGM)'s Gallery No. 2.

An opening reception for Durr's Hockey in a Small City – and two other exhibits at the EAGM – happened on January 16. The exhibit features 20 photos mounted on wood boards.

Durr grew up in Edmonton, where she played and watched the game, and moved to Estevan several years ago. She quickly became an avid supporter of the Bruins, and she has rarely missed a game.

“The young men on the Bruins team fuel my desire to provide the fans to feel what they (the Bruin players) are going through in that moment,” Durr said in her artist statement. “I enjoy being able to freely snap them in the height of their adrenaline rush with a great opportunity awaiting, or even the sadness of a not so great outcome.”

Durr, who is a self-taught photographer and the owner of Jennifer Durr Photography, started taking Bruin pictures in the 2010-11 season – the last for the Bruins in the Civic Auditorium – because she and her husband, Billy, are friends with former Bruin goaltender Joel Danyluk.

The following year, the club moved to Spectra Place (now Affinity Place), which was great, Durr said, in part because the lighting at Affinity is perfect for photography.

In 2012-13, she became the Bruins' official photographer. Her Bruin photographs appear in Lifestyles regularly during the Bruins' season.

“The challenge of taking those perfect shots is always in the forefront of my mind,” said Durr. “I want the fans to be able to relate to their team on a whole different level.”

This is the first time that Durr has had her work in a gallery setting, and she said she felt honoured when the EAGM invited her to have an exhibit.

“I thought it was pretty cool that my work stood out enough that they would want to have it here,” said Durr.

Durr's exhibit is through the Saskatchewan Prairie Light Photography Festival. Numerous photography exhibits are happening at Saskatchewan art galleries this month.

Hockey in a Small City will remain at the EAGM until February 26.
