Coalers are about to clinch first

The Bienfait Coalers are on the cusp of clinching top spot in the Big 6 Hockey League's overall standings.

Bienfait (13-0-0) leads the league with 26 points, which is 10 better than the Midale Mustangs (8-4). If Bienfait wins one more game, or if Midale loses once more, then Bienfait will be assured of top spot.

The Coalers won twice during the past week. They edged the Carnduff Red Devils 5-4 on January 10, and shelled the Oxbow Huskies 9-3 the following day.

Midale kept pace by knocking off the Redvers Rockets 5-1, and outscoring Oxbow 8-5.

Three teams are tied for third: the Wawota Flyers (6-6-1), the Arcola-Kisbey Combines (6-7-1) and the Oxbow Huskies (6-8-1). Wawota has a game in hand on Arcola-Kisbey, and two in hand on Oxbow.

Wawota's most recent games were a 6-2 win over Oxbow and a 2-0 loss to Redvers. Arcola-Kisbey lost 8-4 to Carnduff in their most recent game. And Oxbow lost the three games they played in the past week.

Carnduff (5-8) sits sixth and Redvers (3-8-3) is seventh.

Three games are scheduled for January 17: Wawota at Midale, Bienfait at Redvers and Carnduff at Oxbow. Games for January 18 are Carnduff at Wawota and Arcola-Kisbey at Midale.

And two more will be played on January 21: Midale at Bienfait and Oxbow at Arcola-Kisbey.

All games will start at 8 p.m.

Big 6 teams are also preparing for provincials. Three teams are in the Senior A division: Bienfait, Oxbow and Arcola-Kisbey. Bienfait will play Milestone in their first series, while Arcola-Kisbey gets Cuper and Oxbow plays Langenburg.

Carnduff is in Senior B, and they will play Balcarres in their first round.

In Senior C, Redvers will play Ochapowace, and Wawota will play Bredenbury.

Provincial series will begin later this month.
