Speaker announced for farmer's event

Comments

The guest speaker has been announced for this year's Farmer's Appreciation Evening on Thursday, February 27 at the Days Inn Plaza.

Joan McCusker, who was the second on the famed Sandra Schmirler women's curling team that won gold at three world championships and at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, will speak at the event.

McCusker's appearance in Estevan will also be less than a week after the conclusion of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, where she will be on the curling broadcast team.

Her theme will be "Ideas on Finding the Life Balance," according to Farmer's Appreciation Evening chair Alf Tide.

"(She speaks on) how you do something like winning a gold medal in curling and still balance your family life along with it," said Tide.

Her curling experiences, both as an athlete and a commentator, play an important role in her presentation.

"Many people have heard her speak, and she comes very highly recommended," Tide said.

McCusker hails from Saltcoats in east-central Saskatchewan, and so she is also familiar with living in a small, rural community, Tide said.

Her presentation is typically at least an hour long, Tide said, so organizers won't be bringing in another featured adult speaker, or any entertainment.

Other highlights of the event will include the Farm Family of the Year Award presentation, and the youth 4-H speakers.

Tide said they have received a couple of nominations for the Farm Family Award already, but they would like to receive more, so that they have four or five families to choose from. The deadline to submit a nomination is January 31.

The 4-H speakers this year will be from the Outram-Madigan 4-H Club.

Tickets are still available for the evening.
