Elusha Baird, a Grade 12 student at Lampman School, has been selected to attend the Forum for Young Canadians in Ottawa from March 2 to 7.

Baird said the forum offers sessions for young people to gather in Ottawa and learn about government processes, while meeting and engaging with MPs and senators. There will be intensive academic sessions, and opportunities to debate controversial issues happening within Canada.

“As a participant, I will have the opportunity to take a behind-the-scenes look into Parliament to truly understand how important decisions are made at the federal level, by experiencing the chance to meet individuals who influence and make the decisions in our capital,” she said.

And Baird will get the chance to further develop leadership and debate skills, as well as learn and engage in Parliamentary democracy.

Baird said she has always had a keen interest in politics. She visited Parliament Hill when she was in the Shad Valley program at Carleton University in 2012, and she thought it would be beneficial to spend a week with 100 other young Canadians in the forum's challenging setting.

“I've always thought of politics as the ability to influence the decisions that affect people in Canada, and to be able to decide how people get to live, day-to-day, in a positive way, because of all the laws that the federal government does for us, and the laws that they create,” said Baird.

The federal government does a lot for Canadians, she said, and she's looking forward to being immersed in how the government operates.
