Creighton Lodge in Estevan is moving forward with a much-needed expansion that will allow them to better meet the needs of residents.
Manager Judy Pratt said they will be extending the lounge by about 35 feet towards Hillcrest Drive. It'll give them additional room for activities, social events and other functions.
"We don't have a place to exercise … our residents like to exercise three or four times a week, and it's very important for seniors to do this," said Pratt.
Residents are close to the lodge's hallways when they do exercise, she said.
Forty-seven people currently reside at the lodge, and the dining room seats 48, so there is enough room to accommodate all the residents at a dinner. But there wouldn't be enough space for the family members.
"If you bring in a group with a couple of instruments, it makes it that much more crowded," said Pratt. "There are lots and lots of reasons we need to expand."
The lounge expansion has been in the works for some time, but a couple of other pressing projects had to be completed first. The fire system had to be replaced. The roof overhangs at the north and south ends were repaired, and that has left the roof in great shape, Pratt said.
They also need to reinforce the pillars in the lodge's underground crawlspace area. That work will likely begin in the spring.
Creighton Lodge is organizing a vacation fundraiser to pay for the project. Tickets are $100 each, and Pratt said they hope to raise $90,000.
They already have about $360,000 in their coffers for the expansion, thanks to donations and previous fundraising efforts. The estimated cost of the project is $550,000, but that figure is a couple of years old, and Pratt noted that construction costs have increased since that time.
The top prize for the fundraiser will be a $5,000 trip voucher. Two other vouchers will also be available.
Ticket sales just started, and sales have been excellent thus far, Pratt said.
The trip winners will be announced at a fundraising dinner and dance on Friday, May 10 at the Doug Third Hall.
