Chambers hosts January meeting

Southeast Regional College CEO Dion McGrath spoke at the January meeting of the Estevan Chamber of Commerce.

*The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce and the Saskatchewan Trade and Export Partnership (STEP) will host Tapping Opportunity in the Bakken on Monday, January 20 at the Ramada Plaza in Regina. It will be an opportunity for businesses to learn how they can launch business efforts in the Bakken region. Former Montana governor Brian Schweitzer will be the guest speaker.

*The chamber is seeking new board members. Nominations will be accepted until January 31. The chamber has seven board members, and they can have between eight to 12 members.

*The chamber's annual general meeting will be on Wednesday, March 19. The keynote speaker has yet to be determined.

*Guest speakers are also being finalized for the annual Farmer's Appreciation Evening next month.

*Southeast Regional College CEO Dion McGrath was the guest speaker. McGrath examined the economic impact of the Bakken play in terms of revenues and employment, but he also studied the impact that it has had on southeast Saskatchewan's housing market. McGrath said that it's not just businesses that have felt the pinch because of the housing shortage in the Estevan area; the college has also been hampered, and there has been a decline in full-time enrolments. The college is seeking partners for an affordable housing initiative in Estevan. (Next week's edition of Lifestyles will have more on McGrath's speech).

*The next meeting will be February 12 at Allie's Dining. Mayor Roy Ludwig will be the guest speaker.
