Preparations have begun for the 2014 edition of the Estevan Farmer's Appreciation Evening.
It will take place on Thursday, February 27 at the Days Inn Plaza. The event will feature the presentation of the Farm Family of the Year Award, along with several 4-H speakers and at least one keynote speaker.
Nominations are now being accepted for the Farm Family honour. A family from any of the 12 RMs that surround Estevan can be nominated.
Committee chair Alf Tide said the award honours families who not only thrive in agriculture, but who are community-minded.
“They can be a livestock farm or a grain farm,” said Tide. “If you look at the history of the people who have won the award, it's a pretty even mix of mixed farmers and grain farmers.”
Not only have the previous winners been outstanding farmers, but they have often been involved with municipal politics, and they have all chaired different organizations in their communities.
“You don't necessarily have to be a big farmer,” said Tide. “If you look at the list of winners, there are a lot of farmers who weren't very big. But they were pillars in the community.”
A couple nominations for the 2013 award will be carried over to 2014, Tide said. But they would like to get a few more, and have four or five candidates for the selection committee to choose from.
Nominations are available at the Estevan Chamber of Commerce office. The deadline to file papers is February 1.
The 4-H speakers have yet to be finalized, but Tide said it's the Outram-Madigan club's turn to supply speakers for the evening, and so they will be approached first.
The keynote speaker has yet to be announced, but Tide said they have spoken with several prominent individuals.
