Elecs win consolation side of tournament

The Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs won the consolation round final at their annual home tournament this year.

The Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs senior girls' basketball team enjoyed some success on and off the court during their annual Shoot for a Cure home basketball tournament on November 29 and 30.

The Elecs went 2-1 at the tournament, and won the consolation final. They opened the tournament with a close 47-42 loss against the Weyburn Comprehensive School Eagles on the 29th.

Estevan responded with a lopsided 63-24 win over Swan River in the morning of the 30th. Estevan then routed Melville 63-32 in the consolation round final.

"The girls progressively improved throughout the tournament on the weekend," said head coach Jessie Smoliak. "I am excited to work with them, as we are a young team. We have six new players on the team, (with) four of them being in Grade 9.

"It is a huge jump from playing elementary school to competitive 4A basketball on a senior team. They have a lot to offer and I am excited to watch them develop."

Lumsden won the tournament with a 63-39 victory over Swift Current.

The Elecs also once again used the tournament as a fundraiser for the fight against breast cancer. The Elecs players sported pink jerseys for all of their games, and there were various fundraisers throughout the weekend.

T-shirt sales, bake sales and contests were employed to raise funds. A quilt was raffled off during the tournament's final game, and tickets were sold for an iPod.

The tournament raised $3,400.65 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
