The committee that is trying to secure the 2016 Saskatchewan Summer Games for Estevan is making final preparations for a visit from the Saskatchewan Games Council's site selection committee on Thursday, November 7.
Some of the details for the site selection committee's visit have been released. It will start at 10 a.m. at the Estevan Comprehensive School – the site for the proposed athlete's village, as well as the basketball and tennis competitions.
From there, they will tour some of the athletic facilities, along with the St. Joseph's Hospital and physician offices, before arriving at the Saskatchewan Energy Training Institute (SETI). The SETI is the proposed centre for VIPs, media and volunteers during the Games.
The SETI will also be the site of a luncheon for the site selection committee and local invited guests on November 7.
The tour will resume with several more site visits, and it will wrap up at the Estevan Leisure Centre. It is home to the RM of Estevan Aquatic Centre, which will be used for swimming events; and Affinity Place, which would be the site of the opening and closing ceremonies.
Estevan's bid committee will also be showing videos and photos of the archery range and the Boundary Dam reservoir, since they won't have time to visit those locations.
Lyons said support from the community remains strong. They will continue to publicize the site selection committee's visit prior to November 7, and they hope that the community is excited that Estevan is on the short list.
"People can get on board with visual supports," said Lyons. "They can put a sign in the window of their house, or on their lawn. Businesses can put signs in their windows or on their leader boards, or they can talk to their customers about it."
The local committee has also developed a social media presence. People can show their support via Facebook and Twitter; those who tweet about Estevan's bid are asked to include the hash tag "Estevan2016."
"We're hoping that by the end of the day, when we do our wrap-up meeting, that we can go on-line and say 'This is what people are talking about today in Estevan,' and show them that people are really excited that they're here," said Lyons.
She also encourages local residents to tackle clean-up projects so that Estevan is looking great when the selection committee arrives.
Swift Current, Humboldt and Melfort are the other communities on the short-list for the 2016 Games. They will also receive visits from the site selection committee between November 5 to 8.
