Wilhelm Construction has been recognized for its success since it opened in 2007, as it captured the Growth and Expansion Award at the Saskatchewan Achievers in Business Excellence (ABEX) Awards on October 26 in Saskatoon.
The award is given to a business that has made significant changes in their business through job creation and/or investment.
Wilhelm Construction started with two people when it opened about six years ago, and has grown to 29 employees, including site supervisors, project coordinators, designers, technologists, accountants, carpenters and labourers. They have completed projects in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors.
The company has more than $20 million in completed projects in the last five years.
“This was a good team win as far as the company goes,” said Wilhelm. “We had people with us at the awards who have been working with us for five-plus years.”
Wilhelm said the award allowed them to reflect on the past, their accomplishments, and what they can learn. And it gives them incentive to further grow the business.
“We're expanding to some of the other areas in the province – wherever clients ask us to go,” said Wilhelm.
Not only do they need more people to take care of building projects in the Estevan area, but they need workers who will travel elsewhere to handle Wilhelm Construction's growing client list outside of the southeast region.
Wilhelm Construction was up against drilling company Crusader Drilling, information-technology firm DevFacto Technologies, agriculture retail business G-Mac's Ag Team, pumping product and service outfit North Fringe Industrial Technologies, and Yorkton Plumbing and Heating for the Growth and Expansion Award.
“We were up against some good businesses,” said Wilhelm.
It's the latest honour for Wilhelm Construction. Two years ago, at the Estevan Business Excellence Awards, Wilhelm was named the Young Entrepreneur of the Year, and the firm was chosen as the Business of the Year.
The ABEX Awards are handed out annually by the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce.
