Ron Carson was recognized October 26 for his longevity and success in the Saskatchewan oil patch, as he was presented with the Business Leader of the Year Award at the Saskatchewan Achievers in Business Excellence (ABEX) Awards in Saskatoon.
Carson is the president and general manager of Carson Energy Services (CES), which is a division of Flint Energy Services. Carson founded the company as Carson Welding and Maintenance in 1974; at the time they had eight employees, two welding units and two service crews.
At the time, he ran one of the welding rigs.
The company continued to grow, and by 1985, it had reached 100 employees. Crew trucks and construction equipment were added to the fleet over time, and diversified the services that the business provided.
In 2009, the company changed its name to Carson Energy Services to better reflect the wide range of services it offers.
"At all times, Ron kept a singular focus on the need for safety, implementing a comprehensive safety training and tracking program, and requiring all staff to attend an annual CAR (compliance, accountability and responsibility) seminar," states his award biography.
"The company reached four million man-hours free of time loss accidents in the 1990s – a remarkable and until then, unheard of achievement in southeast Saskatchewan’s oil industry."
Carson has added a safety training branch to CES to provide experienced observation, site management, specialized safety equipment and training for clients.
CES now employs over 1,100 individuals from 14 locations in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and eastern Alberta.
Flint Energy Services acquired the company in 2011.
The Business Leader of the Year Award is the latest accolade for Carson. He was named the Southeast Saskatchewan Oilman of the Year in 1997, and Ernst and Young's Entrepreneur of the Year for West Central Canada in 2009.
He was inducted into the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 2011.
The Business Leader of the Year Award is handed out annually to an individual who exemplifies the qualities of a business visionary. The recipient enjoys outstanding success in business or industry through the development of a new process, product or service, or for meaningful contributions to the local business community.
The ABEX Awards are handed out annually by the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce.
