The new beach volleyball courts at the Woodlawn Regional Park's Boundary Dam site were the site of one of their first marquee events: the Summer Smash Down tournament September 21.
Seven teams entered the tournament.
The teams were placed into a round-robin. If they lost two consecutive matches, they were eliminated. The surviving teams advanced to the playoff round.
Park manager Nathan Puffalt said that each team entered had a great time and loved the volleyball courts.
"The top three teams were very competitive, with a lot of guys who had played high school and even some college volleyball," said Puffalt.
Everyone in the tournament had played at least some volleyball, and so even the lower-ranked teams were competitive.
Live music was supplied by the Third Town Band, the Steve Gibson Band and Third Degree Birnz. All three groups were great, Puffalt said.
The tournament allowed the park's staff to realize the work that is needed to host a tournament, Puffalt said, and what they have to do to ensure the courts remain in great condition.
Puffalt said they want to attract some pretty high-calibre competitions to the beach volleyball courts, and he hopes that local residents will want to see the great volleyball that will be in Estevan in the coming years.
