Choose Life Ministries continued to move forward with its fundraising initiatives with their second annual Red Carpet Gala on September 20 at Living Hope Community Church in Estevan.
Choose Life's founder, Shelley Boyes, said it was a wonderful fundraiser. About 130 tickets were sold, and initial estimates indicate that more than $25,000 was raised. The money will be directed towards a capital fund to construct the ministry's building.
Among the highlights were a performance by comedian Leland Klassen, a testimonial by keynote speaker Krista Fradette, and a live auction. Klassen delivered an amazing show, Boyes said.
"There were several people there who, if they could have fallen on the floor, and started rolling (from laughter), they would have, because it was that funny," said Boyes.
At one time, Fradette attended a program through Mercy Ministries – the organization that Choose Life is modeled after.
"Without programs like that, young women like her would not be where they are today, just because of all the help that she received there," said Boyes.
Fradette's speech also promoted the urgency for a facility like the one that Choose Life wants to build, Boyes said.
The top item from the live auction was a copy of the book "Duck Commander," and an autographed picture of the Robertson family from the reality television series "Duck Dynasty." They fetched $950.
Choose Life's mission is to bring hope and healing to young women who are struggling with life-controlling issues such as depression, substance abuse, self-harm, eating disorders and more.
The program is in a six-month residential setting that is designed to address the spiritual, physical, emotional and intellectual needs of participants. It includes Biblically-based counseling, nutrition and fitness education, along with life-skills training and educational opportunities.
Boyes said that fundraising for Choose Life is progressing well, and additional partners are stepping forward each month.
