The first tournament for Estevan's new beach volleyball courts will be happening on Saturday, September 21.
The Summer Smash Down Beach Volleyball Tournament will start at noon and likely continue until 6:30 or 7 p.m. It will be happening at the Turnbull Excavating Beach Volleyball Complex, which is located in the Woodlawn Regional Park's Boundary Dam campground south of the city.
Woodlawn Regional Park manager Nathan Puffalt said this is a great way to celebrate the opening of the venue.
Games will be happening throughout the afternoon. A grand opening ceremony will occur after the tournament. The tournament's winners will be recognized, and there might be a cheque presentation from the Molson-Coors Canada brewery, as they purchased the naming rights for one of the two beach volleyball courts.
"This wasn't a planned event until Molson's came on board with funding for the beach volleyball courts," said Puffalt. "A total of $10,000 came from them, and they wanted to put on a party to help celebrate it and to celebrate the grand opening of the venue.
"So we partnered with them to put on this party and to help close out summer in style."
The winning team will receive 14 tickets to the Molson skybox at a Regina Pats game in the Brandt Centre this season.
Teams will be accepted until they believe they have reached the maximum, Puffalt said.
There will also be live music, as three musical acts have been confirmed: the Third Town Band, Steve Gibson and headliners Third Degree Birnz.
Puffalt said there has been a Thursday drop-in league since the volleyball courts opened in August, and about 15 people have come out each week. They're looking forward to hosting more events at the complex next year, such as a league or a provincially-sanctioned event.
