United Way begins hosting weekly meetings
The United Way Estevan’s board members have started to host weekly meetings in advance of their upcoming telethon.
The first meeting was on August 28. The board will continue to meet weekly on Wednesday nights until the telethon on October 18 and 19. President Dawn Schell said that the board will use the meetings to plan for the telethon, and to form committees that will ensure the event goes smoothly.
“I’m confident that everything will go off as it always does,” said Schell.
Two things are needed in particular. The first is entertainment. Schell said they’re always looking for people to perform during the 33-hour event.
“If anybody is interested, or knows of anybody who is new to town and can provide entertainment, or who wants to be part of the event, they can call the United Way office,” said Schell.
Volunteers are needed in other areas besides singing, dancing or playing a musical instrument, Schell said. People are required to help out in various on-screen and behind the scenes capacities. And they need talented local crafters who can donate homemade items for the bid items table.
The food committee will be contacting organizations to secure food donations for the telethon.
This year’s goal is $350,000, and the theme is “I am the Way.” Schell is confident that Estevan will meet its objective.
Estevan’s United Way has been the first in Canada to reach its goal 35 times in the telethon’s 36-year history.
Proceeds from the telethon are directed towards the United Way’s member agencies and community projects.
