Choose Life Ministry is preparing to host its second annual Red Carpet Fundraising Banquet.
The event will happen on Friday, September 20 at Living Hope Community Church in Estevan. A formal dinner will open the evening, and it will be followed by a guest speaker and entertainment from comedian Leland Klassen. A live auction will wrap up the function.
A silent auction will also be part of the fundraiser.
Choose Life founder Shelley Boyes said that Klassen is originally from Moose Jaw and honed his skills in Saskatchewan before moving to Vancouver. He hosts the television series "Popcorn TV" on the Crossroads Television Station.
"He provides good clean comedy and family entertainment," said Boyes.
The unnamed guest speaker, who grew up in Saskatchewan, has been through a program that's similar to what Choose Life will offer.
"She is going to talk about how her life changed because of that, and the benefits of this kind of program," Boyes said.
The live auction will boast two tickets for the Saskatchewan Roughriders' game against the Edmonton Eskimos on October 12; a signed Weston Dressler Rider jersey and other Rider memorabilia signed by Dressler; a handmade quilt, jewelry and pottery; and other items.
Choose Life Ministry was launched in southeast Saskatchewan in January 2012. The organization is managed by a non-profit board of directors, and has the support of a local church.
Its mission is to bring hope and healing to young women who are struggling with life-controlling issues such as depression, substance abuse, self-harm, eating disorders and more.
The program is in a six-month residential setting that is designed to address the whole person, with spiritual, physical, emotional and intellectual elements. It includes Biblically-based counseling, nutrition and fitness education, life-skills training and educational opportunities.
Boyes said that fundraising for Choose Life is progressing well, and she believes that they are well on their way to reaching the $1.5 million necessary before it will open.
