The Estevan Curling Club recognized ice maker Bill Kapiczowski for a decade of service during the club's wind-up on March 14.
Kapiczowski has been the club's ice-maker since 2003. He recalled that the club had a reputation for having bad ice, and that he didn't enjoy curling at the rink at that time. So he decided to accept the ice maker job.
He recalled that Robert Keating of the Benson Curling Club offered Kapiczowski some advice, and that he had assistance from Frank Elberg and Wayne Wallace.
“I wish I was maybe 30 years longer, because if that was the case, I could do this for another 30 years,” Kapiczowski said.
But it's getting tougher for him to do the job, he said, and he made a decision a couple years ago that he would retire after the 2012-13 season. He said he wanted to keep working until after the club hosted a couple high-calibre events: the men's and women's Dominion provincials in 2012, and the SaskTel Southern Men's Playdowns in January of 2013.
“I think we got through that, and I think they worked out well for us,” said Kapiczowski.
Kapiczowski said he always gave a good effort, that he's proud of the work that he's done, and he hopes that Estevan has regained its reputation as a good place to curl.
