Chamber notes

Woodlawn Regional Park manager Nathaniel Puffalt was the guest speaker at the March 13 Chamber meeting.

Highlights from the March 13 meeting of the Estevan Chamber of Commerce:

*Sponsors are still needed for this year's edition of the Wilhelm Construction Services Inc. Estevan Business Excellence (EBEX) Awards. The awards will be handed out in June. Among the sponsorship opportunities available are the Business Leader of the Year Award and the Growth and Expansion Award. Nominations for the EBEX awards have to be filed by April 15.

*The Chamber is continuing to promote the upcoming trip to China. Community development manager Michel Cyrenne will travel to the country in late March and early April. Others from the community will travel in October. The deadline to apply is in mid-August.

*Lori Naka, Josh LeBlanc, Karen Anderson and Lynn Chipley have been elected to the Chamber's board of directors. Six candidates were vying for four vacancies on the board.

*Woodlawn Regional Park manager Nathaniel Puffalt was the guest speaker. Puffalt provided an update on the restoration work taking place at the park and at its surrounding attractions. He shared photos of the park before the flooding, the damage caused by the floods in 2011, and how the park looks now. Puffalt also discussed their plans for 2013 and beyond for the main Souris River campground and the Boundary Dam Recreation Site campground. Between Boundary Dam and the Souris River campgrounds, Woodlawn expects to have 350 campsites available this year, and they're going to start development on another 70 sites at the old chuckwagon track that could be open for overflow camping before the end of the year. Grand reopening ceremonies for the park will take place during the Canada Day long weekend.

*The Chamber's annual general meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 20 at the Days Inn Plaza. Saskatchewan Chamber CEO Steve McLellan will be the guest speaker.

*The next monthly meeting will be April 10. Ron Areshenkoff from Spectra Financial will discuss the Chamber Group Insurance Plan.
