Bulldogs advance in league play


The Estevan Dayman Trucking Bulldogs defeated the Weyburn Angels in the first round of league playoffs.

The Estevan Dayman Trucking Bantam A Bulldogs have advanced to the second round of the playoffs in the South Saskatchewan Female Hockey League.

The Bulldogs defeated the Weyburn Angels 17-2 in a two-game, total-goal series. Estevan won Game 1 9-1 on February 26, and took Game 2 8-1 on March 2.

Weyburn actually scored first in Game 1, but Estevan would ring up nine unanswered goals to rout their foes. Jenna Kreklewich and Julia Sibley each had two goals and two assists, while Shania Taylor added two goals and a helper. Carly Kreklewich, Hannah Battersby and Jenna Grube were the other goal scorers.

The Bulldogs raced out to a 5-0 lead by the midway mark of the second period of Game 2. Grube had three of Estevan's first five goals, and finished with four goals on the night. Jenna Kreklewich had two goals for the second straight game. Taylor and Tionna Nashiem also scored.

Litesha Spittal was in goal in Game 1. Marcedes Singleton was the goalie in Game 2.

The Bulldogs' opponent in the next round of the playoffs has yet to be determined. They'll play either the Wood River Ice Cats or the Fort Qu'Appelle Flyers.

The second round has to be finished by March 10.

The Estevan Power Dodge Chargers Bantam A provincial team has advanced to the provincial final.

Estevan defeated the Regina Riot 6-1 on March 6 to win the two-game, total-goal provincial semi-final series 9-3.

Estevan had won Game 1 3-2 in late February.

The Chargers scored three times in the first period to take a 3-0 lead in the game, and a 6-1 lead in the series. The Riot cut into the deficit with a goal late in the first, but Estevan scored twice in the second to dash any hopes of a comeback.

Mariah McKersie had a goal and two assists in the win. Carly Kreklewich, Shania Taylor, Rachel Mack, Kailey McLellan and Michaella Matthies also scored.

Spittal was the winning goaltender.

The Chargers will face a team from Saskatoon in the provincial final. Dates for the games have yet to be set, but the final has to be finished by March 20.

The Estevan Baxter Midget A Cougars were eliminated from provincial play when they lost 4-1 to the Fort Qu'Appelle Flyers on March 3. Fort Qu'Appelle won the two-game series 7-3.

Allison Mack scored Estevan's lone goal in Game 2. Brianna Cote was in goal.

The Cougars are still playing in league playoffs. They'll face the Regina Avalanche in a two-game, total-goal quarter-final series. Game 1 is March 9 in Regina, and Game 10 is March 10 in Estevan at Spectra Place. That game will start at 3:30 p.m.
