Cornerstone board releases calendar

The South East Cornerstone Public School Board has selected the five-day instructional week calendar that it will utilize for the 2013-14 school year.

According to new provincial guidelines, calendars must ensure that a minimum of 950 hours of instructional time is provided to all students.

There will be 190 instructional days and seven non-instructional days. There will also be a spring break from Saturday, March 22 to Sunday, March 30, and a break for Good Friday and Easter from Friday, April 18 to Monday, April 21.

Traditionally, the spring break has followed the Good Friday and Easter long weekend.

The annual February break has also been eliminated.

"We want to ensure you are informed about the process and the opportunities for increased instructional time and student outcomes," Cornerstone stated in a press release.

"We have worked cooperatively with stakeholders and, through discussion and consultation with representative groups, selected the calendar which would have the most impact on student achievement and outcomes, and at the same time allow the division to adhere to the stipulated minimum 950 hours."

The 2013-14 school year will begin on Tuesday, September 3, which is the day after Labour Day, and there will be the customary break for Christmas and New Year's. Students will be out of the classroom from Saturday, December 21 to Sunday, January 5.

The final day of classes will be Friday, June 27.

A copy of the calendar can be view on the South East Cornerstone website.
