Komarnicki announces he won't run again

Souris-Moose Mountain MP Ed Komarnicki has announced that he won't run again in the next federal election in 2015.

Komarnicki has been the Souris-Moose Mountain MP since 2004, when he defeated former premier Grant Devine - who was running as an independent - and four other candidates, in an election that attracted the attention of political observers from across the country.

He was re-elected in lopsided fashion in 2006, 2008 and 2011.

Komarnicki made the announcement during a meeting of the local Conservative constituency association.

“There comes a time when you have to decide whether you will run again, and that time for me is now," he said in a press release. "In fairness to the Souris-Moose Mountain Conservative board and to the constituency, I felt it important to announce my decision early in this term.

“This constituency is strongly Conservative and the interest of candidates to replace me, I’m sure, will be high, and so I felt I should give plenty of time for those that would be interested to set their plans in order.”

Komarnicki said he will be available to help in an orderly transition as much as possible.

It has been a great experience, he said, and a pleasure to represent the riding. He has also enjoyed making specific representations on behalf of constituents.

“It has also been great to be a part of a government and to be involved in the many infrastructure investments throughout the constituency.”

Komarnicki said he looks forward to continuing to represent the constituency until the next federal election.
