Hengens recognized for years of service

Estevan Minor Hockey Association executive member John Lay and president Kelly Kjersem presented the Volunteer of the Year Award to Sheryl and Ambrose Hengen.

The Estevan Minor Hockey Association (EMHA) has recognized Ambrose and Sheryl Hengen for their many years of dedicated service to the organization.

The Hengen's were presented with the EMHA Volunteer of the Year Award on February 13, prior to the Estevan Apex Midget AA Bruins final home game of the regular season. Ambrose and Sheryl have two sons, Jason and Tyler, on that team.

This is the first time that the award has been shared by two people.

Their involvement began in 1995, when their oldest son, Riley, started to play hockey. He was followed by Michael, who started to play in 1997, Jason in 2000 and Tyler in 2002.

"As their boys' hockey careers went in different directions, their commitment to Estevan Minor Hockey did not change, with their countless hours of travel and practices, and their endless hours of watching games," their award biography statement.

The Hengens went to as many as 14 minor hockey games in one weekend, and they been involved with over 1,400 minor hockey games. They have served as coach, manager and treasurer with their sons' teams, and they organized team fundraisers, sold programs prior to games, and handled other team responsibilities.

They have also been involved with the EMHA board, and they were involved with Estevan's new arena committee.
