Chargers advance to Round 2

The Estevan Bantam Female Chargers defeated the Weyburn Wings 6-2 on February 7 to win the two-game, total-goal provincial series 11-3.

Estevan had defeated Weyburn 5-1 in Game 1 earlier in the month.

Weyburn scored early in Game 2 to pull within three goals in the series, but Estevan dashed any hope of a Weyburn comeback with goals eight seconds apart by Jenna Grube and Michaella Matthies late in the first. Matthies and Meagan LeBlanc scored in the second to give Estevan a 4-1 lead in the game, and a 9-2 advantage in the series.

After a Weyburn goal late in the third, Matthies and Kailey McLellan would score for Estevan to finish the scoring.

Tamara Irwin was in goal.

Estevan will play the Regina Riot in the second round.

The Chargers are comprised of players from the Estevan Power Dodge Chargers and the Estevan Dayman Trucking Bulldogs.

The Power Dodge Chargers wrapped up their regular season with a 2-2 tie against the Weyburn Athletics on February 11.

The two teams were scoreless after the first period. Weyburn opened the scoring early in the second, but McKersie tied the game with 17 seconds left in the frame. Allie Butler gave the Chargers a 2-1 lead early in the third, but Weyburn tied the game with seven minutes left in the period.

Tamara Irwin was in goal.

The tie ended the Chargers 11-game winning streak. They finished the season with a 19-game unbeaten streak in league play.

The Chargers' final regular season record is 22-1-3, and they will be the No. 1 seed in the South Saskatchewan Female Hockey League's playoffs. They'll enjoy a bye in the first round of the playoffs.

The Estevan Baxter Midget A Cougars defeated the Weyburn Oilers 5-2 in league play on February 11.

Brooklyn Dukart scored twice, and Cheyenne Grant had a goal and two assists, to pace the Cougars attack. Cassidy Siebert and Allison Mack scored Estevan's other goals.

Veronique Poirier was in goal for the victory.

The Cougars' record is 11-6-4, as they enter the final week of the regular season. They'll visit the Fort Qu'Appelle Flyers on February 15, and then they'll host the Regina Avalanche for a pair of games: February 16 at 5:15 p.m. at the Civic Auditorium, and February 17 at 2 p.m. at Spectra Place.
