New classroom at Sacred Heart

Grade 7/8 French Immersion students Colton Reed, Nikita LeBlanc, Cassidy Clow, Tionna Nashiem and (seated) Danika Poirier are pleased to be in their new classroom.

A new classroom has been finished at Sacred Heart School/École Sacre Coeur in Estevan, providing a solution for the school's burgeoning number of students.

The classroom, which is at the west edge of the school, will be for Grade 7 and 8 French Immersion students. To accommodate the new classroom, a new west entrance area had to be constructed.

Students are happy with the new classroom, according to principal Mary Ellen Barreth. They were studying in a temporary room at the back of the school's library. The students moved desks and supplies from the library to the classroom January 29. Classes were held in the new room later that day.

"Our students are very excited," said Barreth. "They've also been very patient, and waited a very long time to get into their new classroom."

Some work still remains on the west entrance, such as applying stucco and asphalt, and finishing the painting. Those tasks will be completed in the spring, she said. But the new entrance can be used until that time.

The renovation was needed because Sacred Heart is experiencing growth like many other schools in Estevan, and Sacred Heart didn't have enough room to accommodate all of their students. The new classroom offers an adequate solution, but Barreth said Sacred Heart will continue to explore options for further expansion.
