Female teams go unbeaten


The Estevan Baxter Midget A Cougars hosted Wood River in a league game January 19.

The Estevan Power Dodge Bantam A Chargers female hockey team won four league games in a four-day span from January 18 to 21.

The Chargers opened the hectic stretch with an 8-2 win over the Regina Wild on the 18th. Mariah McKersie scored four times in the second period alone, and finished with five goals and two assists. Kailey McLellan had the other three goals.

Their next game was a 12-2 rout over the Weyburn Angels the following day. McKersie had her second straight seven-point game, as she finished with three goals and four assists. McLellan had five goals and an assist. Rachel Mack scored twice, while Megan LeBlanc and Teanna Michel also scored for Estevan, who notched the first six goals of the game.

Michaella Matthies had two goals and an assist in the Chargers' 4-2 win over the Weyburn Athletics on the 20th. LeBlanc and McKersie had the other goals.

LeBlanc and McLellan each had two goals in the Chargers' 5-1 victory over the Fort Qu'Appelle Flyers on January 21. Taylor Currie also scored. Matthies added three assists.

Tamara Irwin was in goal for all four games.

The Chargers' record in league play is 20-1-2.

The Estevan Dayman Trucking Bantam A Bulldogs went three-for-three in their league games.

First was a 6-1 triumph over the Prairie Storm on January 18. Jenna Kreklewich had the first two goals, and added an assist. Shania Taylor scored the game's final four goals, and assisted on Kreklewich's markers. Jenna Grube added three helpers.

The Bulldogs rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Regina Wild 4-2 on January 19. Kreklewich had two goals and an assist, while Taylor and Carly Kreklewich also scored.

Taylor scored three times in a 7-0 rout of the Weyburn Angels on the 20th. Grube, Jenna Kreklewich and Charnel Kopec were the other goal scorers. (Double-check).

Litesha Spittal started in all three contests.

The Bulldogs were also slated to play on January 23 in Arcola against the Weyburn Athletics. (Results were not available at press time).

Their record, prior to the game against the Athletics, was 15-1-4. They'll visit the Springside Lions on January 26.

The Estevan Baxter Midget A Cougars played to a 1-1 tie against the Wood River Ice Cats on January 19. The first two periods were scoreless, but then Wood River scored midway through the third period to take a 1-0 lead. Paige Collopy responded for Estevan moments later to tie the game.

Brianna Cote and Veronique Poirier split the goaltending duties in the contest.

The Midget A Cougars have a 9-4-2 record. They'll travel to Conquest on January 26 and 27 to play the Dienfenbaker Thunder.

The Cougars will play Weyburn in the first round of provincials. Game 1 in the two-game, total-goal series will be played January 28 at Spectra Place, starting at 7:30 p.m.
