Estevan's Sherrilee Orsted went 3-3 at the SaskPower Southern Women's Playdowns that were held in Melville from January 10 to 13.
Orsted opened with an 8-7, 11-end win over Weyburn's Deanne Miller-Jones. Orsted trailed 6-3 through seven ends, but scored three in the eighth to tie the match. After the two teams traded points in the ninth and 10th ends, Orsted scored once in the 11th for the win.
She lost 9-7 to Deanna Doig of Kronau in her next game. Orsted scored three in the ninth to take a 7-6 lead, but Doig responded with three of her own in the 10th.
Orsted won her next two games: 9-8 over Laurie Cyca of Melville, and 8-4 in nine ends over Mandy Selzer of Balgonie. Against Cyca, Orsted led 6-2 after four ends, but Cyca fought back to lead 7-6 after six and 8-7 after eight ends. Orsted scored one in the ninth to tie the game, and stole the winning point in the 10th.
Orsted and Selzer were tied at four after eight ends, but Orsted scored four in the ninth to take over the game.
Orsted dropped her final two games. First was an 11-4, nine-end decision against Doig, as Doig scored five in the ninth for a seven-point lead.
The other was an 8-5 decision against Teejay Haichert of Swift Current. For the second straight game, a five-point end was Orsted's undoing, but this time, it was a five-spot in the sixth end that allowed Haichert to lead 7-2.
Other members of Orsted's team were third Candace Newkirk, second Brittay Rae and lead Jade Ivan.
One other team with local connections competed at southerns. Candace Chisholm's rink, competing out of the Tartan Curling Club in Regina, won the B event. Former Estevan resident Cindy Ricci was a third on Chisholm's entry, and their coach is Benson-area resident Jim Packet.
