The Estevan Public Library will host a reading for the new book, “Unpunished,” which was written by a local author, under the pseudonym of D.D.K.
The event will happen on Saturday, January 12 at 2 p.m.
“Unpunished” is a true account of the life experience of Donna, who is a Saskatchewan woman. According to a press release from the library, it’s a story of love, abuse, mental illness, murder and the unknown.
“It’s not a pretty story, however, it is one woman’s true story,” said D.D.K.
It addresses many controversial issues and discusses the forms of abuse that Donna faced. The book was written to help individuals understand that they do not have to dwell or wallow in the past.
Initially Donna did not intend to turn her story into a novel. But a story gradually took shape from diaries, letters, phone messages and legal documents that she had saved. After she began sharing the information with friends and those involved in the legal proceedings, she was strongly encouraged to have her story written.
Time after time she was told it was a fascinating story, and great material for a book or a movie.
Donna believed that her life was very normal, as it was all she knew. However, as she grew personally she realized that life was not, in fact, the same for everyone she met and that her story could help others deal with abuse in their lives.
Ultimately, Donna decided to share her story and after many years and much collaboration, her story became a novel.
D.D.K says she has had a lot of positive feedback for the novel. She has received many e-mails thanking her for writing this inspirational story and explaining the impact it had on their lives.
“If you recognize these situations in your life or somebody else's life ... reach out for help,” said D.D.K. “It is sad how many people waste a huge part of life ... in darkness.”
“This was written in hope that both men and women take a good look at their lives,” she added. “We can all end the cycle and live a wonderful, happy life.”
“This is a very powerful story,” said library adult program coordinator Jill Kergan. “It's remarkable how much one woman can endure and overcome through resilience and a positive outlook on life.”
Following the reading, there will be a book signing and refreshments.
