Chargers reach A final of tournament


The Estevan Power Dodge Bantam A Chargers won the silver medal at a tournament in North Dakota.

The Estevan Power Dodge Chargers and the Estevan Dayman Trucking Bulldogs female bantam A hockey teams entered the 14-and-under division at the recent Girls' International Tournament in Fargo, N.D.

The Chargers won the silver medal, as they won three close games to open the tournament, and then lost the finale. The Chargers defeated the Anoka Tornadoes 6-5 in a shoot out, the Stillwater Black 3-2 and East Grand Forks 1-0.

Megan LeBlanc, Mariah McKersie and Kailey McLellan scored in regulation for Estevan in the win over Anoka. The game was tied at 3-3 after three periods and overtime, so it went to a shootout. LeBlanc scored twice and Michaella Matthies also scored in the penalty shot contest.

Matthies had two goals, including the game-winner early in the third, in the win over Stillwater. McLellan also scored

McLellan scored the only goal in the victory over East Grand Forks – a tally that came midway through the third period.

The Chargers lost 1-0 to Rousseau, Minnesota in the gold medal game. Rousseau scored the game's only goal in the first period.

Tamara Irwin was in goal for all four games. She had the third-best save percentage in the tournament at .950.

The Bulldogs went 2-2 at the tournament, and lost in the B final. They opened with a 2-1 to Stillwater Red, recovered to beat the Bord-Aire Wings 11-0 and the Grand Rapids Greenway Lightning 3-2, and lost 7-1 to the Anoka Tornadoes in the B final.

Jenna Grube had the only goal against Stillwater – a marker in the third that brought the Bulldogs to within a goal.

Shania Taylor had five goals and two assists in the rout of Bord-Aire. Grube had two goals and two assists, and Jenna Kreklewich also had two goals. Lacy Smith and Tionna Nashiem had the other goals.

Julia Sibley, Nashiem and Grube scored in the third period to help the Bulldogs rally from a 2-0 deficit and upend Grand Rapids.

Grube had the only goal against Anoka. It came in the third, and spoiled the shutout bid for Anoka's goalie.

Marcedes Singleton was in goal for all of the Bulldogs' games.

The Estevan Baxter Midget A Cougars won a pair of games in league play, defeating the Regina Flames 6-4 on January 5 and the Regina Panthers 3-2 on January 6.

The Cougars scored all six of their goals against the Flames in the third period, allowing them to rally from deficits of 3-0 and 4-2. Paige Collopy led the attack with two goals, including the game winner. Hailey Dukart, Haley Ronyk, Mackenzie Ronyk and Cheyenne Grant had the other goals.

Brianna Cote and Veronique Poirier shared the goaltending duties for Estevan.

Collopy scored in each of the second and third periods to give Estevan a 2-0 lead on the Panthers. Shayla Mosley scored what proved to be the game winning goal five minutes into the third.

The Panthers scored twice late in the game.

Poirier was in goal against the Panthers.

The Cougars' record is 9-3. They'll visit the Wood River Ice Cats on January 12, and host the Fort Qu'Appelle Flyers on January 13. The game against Fort Qu'Appelle is at 5 p.m. at Spectra Place.
