The Kris Keating rink, competing out of the Benson Curling Club, posted a 3-2 record at the junior men's provincial championship in Weyburn that was held from January 3 to 7.
Keating opened with a convincing 13-3 triumph over Zachary Turner of Saskatoon. Keating scored four in the fourth end to take a 6-2 lead, and added five in the sixth to lead 12-2. Keating stole one in the seventh end, forcing Turner to concede the match.
He continued to roll with an 11-7 win over Weyburn's Travis Tokarz and a 5-4 victory over Saskatoon's Allan Walter. Tokarz had a 7-6 lead after eight ends, but Keating scored four in the ninth end to take the lead, and stole one in the 10th to clinch the victory.
Keating needed to score one in the 10th end to wrap up the victory over Walter in a game that Keating never trailed.
Losses in the final two games of the round-robin ended Keating's tournament. He lost 7-4 to Cole Tenetuik and 11-4 to Brady Scharback; both teams are from Saskatoon. Keating did have a 3-1 lead over Scharback after two ends, but Scharback would scored 10 of the game's final 11 points, including five in the ninth end.
Other members of Keating's rink were: third Andrew Batt, second Marcus Lau, lead Spencer McKnight and coach Robert Keating.
Scharback and Tenetuik proved to be the top teams at provincials, as they would meet in the final. Scharback won the match 9-2 to claim his second straight provincial title.
