The Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs went 5-2 at their home tournament October 19 and 20, and finished with the bronze medal.
Ten teams entered the tournament, and they were divided into two pools of five. Estevan went 3-1 in the round-robin, and finished second in their pool. The Elecs opened with a 2-1 victory over Regina Leboldus (25-20, 27-29, 15-11), and a 2-0 victory over Melfort (25-16, 25-20).
Their first loss was a 2-1 setback against Yorkton Regional (25-23, 24-26, 16-14), but they recovered to defeat Carnduff 2-1 (25-16, 25-27, 15-12) in their final round-robin game.
The Elecs played Weyburn – the third place team in the other pool – and won by a 2-1 score (20-25, 25-12, 25-16) to qualify for the semi-final against Regina Winston Knoll. Winston Knoll came up with a 2-1 win (15-25, 25-19, 25-22).
Estevan defeated Oxbow 2-0 (25-16, 25-18) in the bronze medal game.
Yorkton Regional won the tournament by defeating Winston Knoll 2-1 in the gold medal contest.
Coach Nathan Johnson said Estevan was led offensively by their two power hitters, Kale Little and William Tabbernor. Austin Orsted, Jolan Lingelbach and Layton Stropko also had their share of kills. Keiron Gallipeau played well at the setter position.
The top servers for ECS were Gallipeau and Carson Perkins, while Lingelbach and Orsted were the leading blockers.
This was the fourth tournament of the season for the Elecs, and the third time in which they have won bronze. They also took third place in Weyburn and at the Regina Campbell tournament. They were fifth at the University of Regina tourney.
They have tournaments at Moose Jaw and Yorkton Regional before the 5A South Regional Championship in Swift Current on November 9 and 10.
A top three finish at regionals will send the Elecs to the provincial championship in North Battleford November 16 and 17.
