The Estevan Public Library will host a cupcake decorating session on Sunday, October 21 at 2 p.m. to celebrate Saskatchewan Library Week, which runs from October 15 to 21.
Stacy Murphy, the proprietor of Sweet Pea’s Cupcakes, will be teaching how to decorate cupcakes. This interactive program will cover basic piping techniques: how to fill icing bags, how to tint icing and the different effects of various piping techniques.
Murphy will prepare the cupcakes and the icing, and participants will practice decorating them. Supplies will be provided.
Library adult programmer Jill Kergan said she is looking forward to the event, because cupcake decorating is not something people typically associate with libraries.
“When most people think of libraries they automatically think of books and shushing librarians and those are very dated, stereotypical notions,” said Kergan.
“As society evolves, libraries evolve, too. For instance, now libraries have e-books and audio-books so instead of helping people find books on shelves we help people download them. And as less people come to study, more people come to learn and interact together at programs; our services and social role changes as the needs of our communities change.
“Although libraries’ roles are ever-evolving our general vision is the same: to promote lifelong imagination, creativity and discovery. Programming is an important part of fulfilling that vision.”
Every October, the Saskatchewan Library Association promotes Saskatchewan Library Week, a week to celebrate the important contribution libraries have made to literacy, education, and quality of life in Saskatchewan. It is a week to honour what libraries have done in the past, but also imagine how they can develop to better serve their communities in the future.
Local libraries offer free resources, services and programming to people in the community; and they help shape informed and literate communities across the province.
