The Estevan Lions Club Bantam Steelers wrapped up their season by winning the University of Regina Rams Coaches' Bowl.

Estevan won a pair of 24-minute mini games October 14, defeating the Weyburn Falcons 40-0 and the Regina Lakers 30-22, to win the bowl.

Coach Phil Zajac said the offence was nearly flawless against Weyburn, as they scored on every possession except for one. The defence was terrific, too.

"It was essentially the perfect way to … get the guys' confidence up, and to get the team going," said Zajac.

Estevan had a much tougher game against the Lakers. They led the Regina team 14-8 at half-time. The teams continued to trade touchdowns in the second half, leaving the score tied at 22-22 with a few minutes to play. Estevan gambled on third-and-10 on their final possession, which keyed the eventual winning score, a touchdown pass from Justin Talent to Matthew Haux.

An interception of the Lakers' final possession clinched the victory for Estevan.

"The game that we played against Regina was a great game," said Zajac. "If only it would have been four quarters, it would have been fantastic."

Zajac said the Steelers consistently improved each week, and they beat a good team in the Lakers to win the bowl.

About half the team should be back next year, he said.

The Estevan Century 21 Peewee Chargers finished 1-1 in their bowl game series October 14, as they lost 12-6 against the Regina Huskies in their first 24-minute mini game, and defeated the Grenfell Argos 18-0 in the second.

Coach Steve McLellan said they played well in both games. They moved the ball effectively against the Huskies. Then they had a slow start against the Argos, but recovered to score three times and pull away.

"Our defence was just impenetrable in both games, especially against Grenfell," said McLellan. "I think Grenfell only had one first down the entire game."

It was a good way to end the season, he said, as it was an opportunity to show the progress that the Chargers have made the last two months. They have improved on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

McLellan said between 15 and 20 players are eligible to return next season.
