Minor football teams finish regular season

The Estevan Century 21 Peewee Chargers and the Estevan Lions Club Bantam Steelers minor football teams saw their regular seasons come to an end in home games on October 6.

The Chargers lost 30-6 to the Regina Mustangs – one of the top teams in the Regina Football League. Coach Steve McLellan lauded his players effort, saying it was likely the Chargers' best game of the year, even though it came in a losing effort.

The defence was "awesome," McLellan said, as the club made a couple changes that paid off. Offensively they moved the ball well, and scored a touchdown on a passing play from Andrew Kehler to Cameron Rioux. The major was set up by a long pass from Kehler to Dawson Schaff.

The Steelers wrapped up their season with a 71-8 loss to the top team in the league, the Regina Raiders. The undefeated Raiders had allowed just one touchdown prior to the game against Estevan.

Coach Phil Zajac said the Raiders are a well-coached team that executes plays well. The Raiders used a flea flicker passing play on a couple occasions – the first time the Steelers had seen such a play this year.

Levi Pick scored the Steelers' lone touchdown on a 77-yard run.

Zajac said he was pleased with his team's effort, as they played hard, and never gave up.

Both teams will be playing in bowl tournaments in Regina to finish the season. The Chargers will play the Grenfell Argos and the Regina Huskies. The Steelers will face the Weyburn Eagles and the Regina Lakers.

The bowl tournaments will be round-robins. The Chargers and the Steelers will play 24-minute games against the other teams in the bowl tournaments. The teams with the best record in each division will be declared the champions.
