Rotary district governor Rick Hubbs spoke to local Rotarians during a meeting on October 9.

Rotary Club of Estevan members had the opportunity to hear from district governor Rick Hubbs during Rotary's monthly meeting October 9.

Hubbs, who hails from The Pas, Manitoba, told the local club that the two emphases from Rotary International for this year are public relations and membership. He encouraged the club to promote Rotary, and to educate other about Rotary. When people hear about all the good things that Rotary does, they might want to join.

He applauded Estevan's club for having a lot of women as members, and for getting young people involved.

He also stressed a pair of themes for this year. The first is the 2012-13 Rotary International theme of "Peace Through Service." Each district governor has been asked to reflect on what it means.

"Peace starts at home and it starts with us," Hubbs said.

There are different ways that people can bring about peace, he said. It's not just about promoting international peace, but peace in the community.

Hubbs' district theme is "Youth for the Future." Hubbs recently attended an event with the exchange students in the district, and he said that the exchange students are great ambassadors for Rotary.

Hubbs proudly told the club that Rotary is nearing its goal of polio eradication. Polio is now endemic in three nations: Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. Pakistan recently agreed to support Rotary's efforts to combat polio.

The district is developing a cookbook, and proceeds will be directed towards Rotary's polio initiatives. If the cookbook sells out, Hubbs said it could raise $40,000.

Hubbs encourages Rotarians to attend the district convention in June of 2013 in The Pas. Not only will it be a celebration of Rotary's efforts internationally and in the district – which encompasses most of Saskatchewan, all of Manitoba and part of northwestern Ontario – but it will also highlight the history of The Pas region, along with hunting and fishing opportunities. Former Canadian governor general Adrienne Clarkson will be the keynote speaker.

Hubbs also announced that he is donating a trip to Clear Water Lake in northwest Manitoba for the 2013 Estevan Rotary Auction.
