An experienced member of the Estevan Board of Police Commissioners is now hoping to become a councillor on Estevan City Council.
Kevin Smith has been on the police board for several years, and has been the board chair for two years. He said he's intrigued by the process associated with City Hall, and he believes there could be a relatively smooth transition to working as a councillor.
"I've always been interested with how things are done," said Smith.
He is looking forward to shaping the future direction of the community.
One thing that he said he has learned from his tenure on the police board is that municipal politics are a process. The existing Council has charted the course for the next few months, and a lot of things, such as property tax monies and revenues from the different levels of government, are largely pre-determined.
But Smith also recognizes that there are always unplanned issues and surprises that have to be resolved quickly.
Infrastructure programs, such as road resurfacing and water main replacements, need to continue, he said. It's also important to proceed with a new nursing home for Estevan.
"I think we have to look at where we are going, what are our short-term plans are, and what are our long-terms plans," said Smith. "We need to clarify what is there for now, and start to look a little further down the road for long-term plans."
A new fire station for the northern half of the city is in the City's long-term plan, and Smith said it will eventually be a necessity.
Smith said he's not going into this election with any set agenda or a pre-disposition; rather he's looking forward to seeing the direction that the City is going and helping to shape that direction.
