The second edition of the Eve of Destruction proved to be a big hit, as a crowd estimated to be between 2,800 and 3,000 people packed the grandstands at the Estevan Motor Speedway on September 15 for the event.

Figure-8 races were the featured attraction this year. Twenty-one cars, trucks, SUVs and other vehicles drove around the track's infield in a figure-8 formation. Collisions happening around the track, particularly at the intersecting point for the two circles.

Everybody seemed to enjoy the event, said event organizer Davin Emmel, and the crashes drew a lot of laughter and cheers, and created a lot of enjoyment, for the audience.

"It's not something you see everyday," said Emmel. "There's something about wrecking stuff that attracts people. And it was a lot of fun doing it, too."

Nobody was injured during the races, either, he said.

Brian Wenzel, driving a Ford Expedition, was the last entrant whose vehicle was still operating, and so he was declared the winner. It was the second straight year that Wenzel was involved in something notable at the Eve of Destruction. Emmel noted that during last year's combine demolition derby, it was Wenzel's combine that wound up being involved in a rollover.

It took about 20 minutes for the Figure 8 races to conclude.

Other highlights from the evening included a rollover competition, some freestyle motorcycle performers, a tug-of-war involving trucks and fireworks.

The event was also a fundraiser. The Torquay Community Centre will get the bulk of the funds, but money will also be directed to United Way Estevan, Estevan Minor Baseball, the Estevan Kinsmen Club, the Estevan Drag Racing Association and the Estevan Motor Speedway.

Emmel said the crowd was even bigger than the audience they had last year for the inaugural Eve of Destruction, when the combine demolition derby was the featured event.

Discussions have already started about next year's event. Emmel suggested a figure-8 race involving school buses – an event that he believes would create a lot of entertainment.
