Local residents played an important role in the success of the recent Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope in Regina.

The Teal Warriors – a 25-person team that featured 17 people from Estevan – raised a little more than $7,000, which was the second-highest total for any team. Team member Mary Antonenko, who is a survivor of Stage 4 ovarian cancer, said their goal when they first formed the team was to raise $2,000.

Antoneko collected about $4,000, which means she brought in more money than any other person at the event.

Team members worked security at the Estevan Motor Speedway four times, collected pledges, and sold key chains and cook books. One member of the team, Len Drebnicki, brought in nearly $500 by having most of his head shaved.

Antonenko said she was very pleased with the support shown by the people and businesses in Estevan.

The walk was an awesome event, she said. Participants raised just under $50,000 for Ovarian Cancer Canada. Additional money continues to come in. Those who were involved had the option of walking two-and-a-half kilometres or five kilometres.

Antonenko said she is already looking forward to having a team in next year's event.
