The first-ever home match for the southeast Saskatchewan-based roller derby team, the Hillbilly Hurt, was a success.
The Hurt defeated a team from Prince Albert 143-133 on September 8 at the Icon Centre in Estevan. The match-up was close throughout, said coach Renee Buskow, as it was tied at 61-61 late in the first half. The Hurt had a slim lead at half time, and gradually built it up in the second half.
This was the Hurt's first actual game in Estevan. They hosted an invitational exhibition in April that attracted players from across the province.
Buskow said it was a good game with Prince Albert, and she was pleased the Hurt emerged victorious.
She was also happy with the attendance, as there were a lot of events happening in Estevan that night.
A recruiting drive will be taking place on Sunday, September 16 at the Icon Centre, beginning at 1 p.m. Roller skates and pads will be provided; prospective players will have to bring their own helmets and water.
Buskow said one of the goals for the program is to have enough players from Estevan and Weyburn for those cities to have their own teams; currently, players from those two cities, and other communities, are a part of the Hurt. If there are separate teams for Estevan and Weyburn, Buskow said there could be more roller derby action in the southeast corner.
