Cameron Robock hopes that he will be a new face on Estevan City Council following the October 24 civic election.
Robock was among the first to file nomination papers for the election. He is taking his third shot at Council; he made unsuccessful bids for a councillor seat in the 2005 by-election and the 2006 civic election.
Now is the time to make another bid for the job, he said.
“I have a lot of supporters, and I have a lot of other people that are backing me on running again,” said Robock.
Housing is his biggest election issue. Affordable housing and rental properties remain in short supply in the city. Robock has seen a lot of good workers leave Estevan because they don't have a place to stay.
Infrastructure is another issue, he said, especially Sixth Street. Council does have plans to resurface Sixth Street in the upcoming term, but Robock said it should have been dealt with years ago.
“Nobody likes the dust flying into their homes,” said Robock. “There's no reason for that. I've never been into a city where the middle road of the city is a gravel road.”
Other roads are also in need of repair, he said.
“Every time I turn around, there's another excuse of why the City hasn't done it, or why it's getting worse again,” said Robock.
The water main replacement program needs to continue, he said. He would also like to see better city planning, so that problems such as the one lane for eastbound traffic on King Street in front of the Estevan Shoppers Mall aren't repeated.
Robock said he's more settled in the community compared to when he ran for Council previously, and he's more well-known in the community. He has also switched jobs, which he believes will give him more time to devote to council. Robock believes that those factors will help his candidacy this year.
