The Estevan Police Service was able to diffuse a potentially dangerous situation on Saturday, involving a suicidal 24-year-old male who planned to collide head-on with another vehicle on a highway.

The police service received a call from a distraught family member of the 24-year-old. The family member informed police that the 24-year-old was going to commit suicide by running head-on with another vehicle on the highway.

The police dispatcher was able to contact the man on his mobile phone, and advise police units of his location. A police officer subsequently located the subject, who then proceeded west out of the city onto Highway 39. The officer was able to contact the man on his cell phone and eventually got him to park his vehicle on the highway west of the weigh scales.

The officer began conversing with him from his patrol car, and subsequently was able to approach and talk to the man seated in his truck. Meanwhile, other members, with the assistance of the RCMP, set up roadblocks on the highway to stop most of the traffic coming through east and west of this location.

After a lengthy conversation with the man, the police officer was able to diffuse the situation, and immobilize the man's truck. He was subsequently cooperative with police, and was taken into custody to seek medical attention.
