Rockettes repeat as provincial champions

Members of the peewee Rockettes who won the provincial championship: players Hannah Battersby, Cassie Blanchette, Madison Frehlich, Jenna Grube, Adrianna Hutt, Carly Kreklewich, Jenna Kreklewich, Tess Lindquist, Cheyenne Odgers, Daria Schaff, Brianna Schoff, Marcedes Singleton, assistant coaches Rene Blanchette and Kim Schaff, and head coach Carmon Lindquist.

For the second straight season, the Estevan Rocket Sales Rockettes have captured the peewee girls provincial softball championship.

Estevan went 6-0 in the 22-team provincial tournament, which was held July 5 to 7 in Regina, and won four of their games in lopsided fashion. Ironically, their two closest games came in the round-robin.

Estevan opened with a 9-7 win over the Saskatoon Lazers. They followed that up with an 18-2, five-inning victory over the Regina Royals White, and a 6-5 win over the Outlook River Cats to finish the round-robin with a 3-0 record.

"We had some tight games, but we managed to pull out the wins," said coach Carmon Lindquist.

They made some uncharacteristic mistakes in the round robin, Lindquist said, and they suffered from a few bad bounces. But the Rockettes still pulled out two tough wins.

In the playoffs, Estevan routed Lumsden 15-0 in three innings in the quarter-final, Moose Jaw 9-2 in five innings in the semi-final, and Watrous 12-3 in five innings in the provincial final.

"When we hit playoffs, the girls really kicked it into high gear, and really generated a lot of offence," said Lindquist. "Tess Lindquist pitched very solid for us, and held them to very few runs."

Carmon Lindquist said that despite the lopsided scores in the playoffs, there was some good competition in the tournament.

Seven members of the Rockettes were part of the team that won provincials last year. Two more players were on the squirt team that won provincials at that level in 2011.

The experience from last year's provincial tournaments paid off, Lindquist said.

"Starting with the (Estevan Girls Softball Association) provincial programs that have been running four to five years now, that has really brought the level of playing talent up a long ways," said Lindquist. "Given the ladies' level of comfort and experience, knowing what they're getting into, and how to prepare for it, it was really important."

The Rockettes will lose seven players to bantam softball next year. Four players are eligible to return to the Rockettes in 2013.
