The Saskatchewan Roughriders opened their season with a bang as they demolished the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 43-16 in a one-sided game. Riders put up more points in this game than at any time last year. Hamilton’s only and biggest play came on an 89-yard run by running back Chevon Walker. Riders quarterback Darian Durant attempted 34 passes, while completing 25, for 390 yards and four touchdowns. The Riders' record is 1-0 and they will face the Edmonton Eskimos in their home opener.
Other scores from Week 1 were: the B.C. Lions hammered the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 33-16, the Calgary Stampeders beat the Montreal Alouettes 38-10 and the Edmonton Eskimos got past the Toronto Argonauts 19-15.
In the Arena Football League, the Philadelphia Soul beat the Tampa Bay Storm 83-79 in a close game. The Soul’s record is 13-3 and they are in first place in the East Division. Their next game is against the Spokane Shock.
Other scores from Week 17 were: the Arizona Rattlers hammered the Spokane Shock 61-35, the Pittsburgh Power beat the Iowa Barnstormers 56-49, the San Jose SaberCats beat the Chicago Rush 75-61 and the New Orleans Voodoo got past the Jacksonville Sharks 65-55.
In Major League Baseball, the Miami Marlins swept the Philadelphia Phillies over the weekend. The score in game three was 5-2. The Marlins' record is 38-40.
In the Western Major Baseball League, the Regina Red Sox lost 5-2 to the Saskatoon Yellow Jackets. The Red Sox record is 17-5 and they are in first place in the East Division.
In NASCAR, Matt Kenseth won the Quaker State 400 by finishing ahead of Kasey Kahne. As for Bobby Labonte, he started the race in 28th and finished the race in 27th. The next race is the Coke Zero 400 Powered by Coca-Cola.
