The Edmonton Oil Kings have won the WHL's Ed Chynoweth Cup after beating the Portland Winterhawks 4-1 in Game 7 to win the league championship series 4-3. Edmonton’s goalie Laurent Brossoit was named the game’s MVP for his 19 saves. This is the modern Oil Kings' first title in franchise history. The last championships by the original Oil Kings occurred in 1971 and 1972. Edmonton is now off to the Memorial Cup, which is in Shawinigan, Quebec. Go Kings Go!
At the Royal Bank Cup, the Penticton Vees have won the title after they beat the Woodstock Slammers 4-3 in the final. This is the team’s second championship; their first one came in 1986 when they were known as the Penticton Knights.
In Major League Baseball, the Miami Marlins took two of three games from the New York Mets after an 8-4 win. The game was tied at four until right fielder Giancarlo Stanton hit a walk off grand slam to win the game.
In NCAA Baseball, the No. 3 Florida Gators took two of three games from the Mississippi State Bulldogs with a 2-1 win in the third game. The Gators' record is 38-14 overall and 16-11 in conference play.
In the Arena Football League, the Philadelphia Soul hammered the Jacksonville Sharks 56-38 in a one-sided game. The Soul’s record is 7-2 and they are leading the East division.
Other scores from Week 12 were: Cleveland Gladiators beat the Milwaukie Mustangs 69-48, the San Jose Sabercats beat the Utah Blaze 70-59, the Georgia Force got past the Tampa Bay Storm 44-41 and the Spokane Shock edged the New Orleans Voodoo 68-62 in over- time.
In NASCAR, Jimmie Johnson won the Bojangles Southern 500 as he finished the race ahead of Denny Hamlin. Bobby Labonte started the race in 29th and finished the race in 22nd. The next race is the Sprint Showdown.
