Bruins get three points on the road

The Estevan Bruins collected three of a possible six points during their final northern road trip of the season.

Estevan opened the road trip with a 4-0 win over the Kindersley Klippers on Thursday night. Then they lost 7-6 in a shootout to the Battlefords North Stars on Friday, and 5-2 to Kindersley on Saturday.

The Bruins scored all four goals on Thursday in the first 10 minutes of the third period. Matt Dochylo opened the scoring. Calder Neufeld added a power play goal a few minutes later. Then Josh Jelinski and Dochylo scored 12 seconds apart to finish off the scoring.

Steven Glass made 31 saves to get his first SJHL shutout.

Estevan had a 3-0 lead on the Battlefords after the first period, thanks to goals by Dochylo, Dylan Smith and Neufeld. Battlefords scored twice in the second to narrow the deficit to 3-2, but Neufeld's second of the game late in the second period gave the Bruins a 4-2 lead after two frames.

The teams traded goals twice in the third, leaving Estevan with a 6-4 lead. Cole Olson had the fifth goal, and Dochylo notched the sixth. But Battlefords drew within a goal with 3:15 to play, and tied the game with four seconds remaining.

Blake Tatchell had three goals and an assist for the Battlefords in regulation.

Neither team scored in overtime. Neufeld scored in the second round of the shootout to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead, but Tatchell scored to extend the shootout. Neither team would score again until the ninth round, when the Battlefords scored. The game ended when the Bruins' Tyler Paslawski didn't score on his shootout attempt.

Glass made 31 saves in regulation and overtime, and seven of nine attempts in the shootout.

Dylan Smith had both goals against Kindersley on Saturday. He gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead after the first period, but Kindersley scored thrice in the second and once in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Smith's second of the game pulled the Bruins within a goal, but then Kindersley scored into an empty net.

Tyler Ross made 26 saves for the Bruins.

Estevan is fourth in the Sherwood Conference with a 26-25-0-2 record, and 54 points. They are four points behind the third place Melville Millionaires. The Mills also have two games in hand.

Estevan can finish no worst than fourth in the conference. The fifth place Notre Dame Hounds trail the Bruins by 17 points with eight games remaining.

The Bruins will host the Yorkton Terriers on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. Four of the Bruins' five remaining games are on home ice.
