Estevan's Pure Energy Beautification Committee has released their plans to improve the city's appearance in 2011.
A total of 10,000 flowers will be planted around the community, said Pure Energy Committee chair Lynn Chipley. Flowers will be planted in downtown Estevan, at local parks and around the Souris Valley Aquatic and Leisure Centre. The Leisure Centre will have the flowers for the first time.
Volunteers will be needed for the flowers, said Chipley. The flowers will be planted on June 1, 2 and 3; those wishing to help out will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Leisure Centre each day. A daily light lunch will be served.
A downtown park for the 1100 block of Fourth Street will be finished this year. Some amenities inside the park are already complete, Chipley said, but more work has to be done.
The Business Improvement District has contributed some funding for the park.
"I think it'll take a while for the park to catch on, but having just spent the last 10 days travelling around the province and stopping in parks for lunch … it's a really nice thing to be able to do when you have to get out of the building," said Chipley.
A mural by Sheila Kasick will be added to one of the walls for the Saskatchewan Liquor Board building. Chipley said it will be good to have a mural mounted on a business in northern Estevan.
"It's a beautiful mural of birds in flight and that sort of thing," said Chipley. "It's very indicative of this area."
A group of sculptures, completed by Weyburn area artist Mike Beaudoin, will be installed in Estevan's west entrance area.
"We've kind of kept them a surprise, because there's going to be a dedication for them when they're done, but they're huge, magnificent sculptures that should go up by the end of June," said Chipley.
The ground will have to be dried up before the sculptures can be erected, Chipley said.
The annual Golden Garbage Can competition between Estevan and Weyburn is scheduled to take place in June. Chipley wants to see how both communities weathered this year's spring flooding before giving the green light for the clean-up contest.
Chipley said she doesn't know if any trees will be planted this year, but she would like to see some new ones at the Lynn Prime Park ball diamonds. And she hopes that developments will be finished in the new Trojan and Dominion Heights subdivisions before new trees are added to those areas.
