The Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) is spotlighting the accomplishments of a local youth during November's Diabetes Awareness Month.
Estevan’s Mark Fergusson is among the Diabetes Champions in Canada who is living a healthy lifestyle with diabetes, advocating for the cause and breaking ground towards a cure.
Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age three, Mark is now 11. The Grade 6 student at Pleasantdale School participates in a host of different sports – including football, archery, hockey, soccer and skiing.
He has also attended the CDA's Saskatchewan Children's Camp for the past four years. Camp has been a highlight of his summer, and an opportunity to learn skills such as carb counting and taking needles.
“I was eight when I took my first needles by myself…camp showed me how to take care of my diabetes and have lots of fun,” Mark said.
His mother, Pat, has taken a leadership role in the diabetes community, including efforts with the CDA. She said she is pleased with the opportunities that exist for her family and community to become engaged in diabetes in a positive way.
She has helped raise awareness for diabetes, and Mark has shared his story and experiences with diabetes with audiences around the province.
“Mark’s diagnosis has made him quite aware of people – perceptive of others and how they deal with things, and so sharing his story with sensitivity comes naturally,” Pat said.
Pat adds that she feels that becoming involved with a group like the CDA allows for networking and the chance to bounce ideas on diabetes management.
“When you become involved and proactive with an organization you feel empowered,” says Pat. “When you can answer questions, it makes you feel more in control. It helps you stay positive.”
During the month of November, the CDA is asking individuals to visit the organization's website and view the profiles of Mark, plus volunteers, sponsors, members, partners, researchers and supporters who are living healthy with diabetes, advocating for the cause and breaking ground towards a cure.
Estevan residents can attend a live Telehealth Saskatchewan broadcast on November 17 that will feature Dr. Brian Rodrigues, a scientist, researcher and board member with the CDA.
