Dear Editor:
Canada is a democracy where our elected Members of Parliament, with good intentions at the time, are expected to pass acts that will create effective laws for the benefit of their constituents, and hopefully the majority of Canadians.
Our Parliament also functions within a system that is confined to the rules of political parties, and a common belief that opposition MPs vote against proposals by the governing political MPs to create good government for all Canadians.
These rules and common beliefs do not always take into account the wishes of the majority of Canadians, the actual benefits or if the laws were cost effective.
Recently in Parliament, an act was presented by the governing political party to scrap a costly gun registration law that has proven to be not as effective as intended in controlling crime with firearms. The proposed act was defeated by the opposition.
For Canadians who are seeking cost-effective government, this proves it is time to let your elected Members of Parliament know your opinions on this and other laws such as the Official Languages Act (1969) that have proven to be ineffective and costly. We are not a bureaucratic dictatorship; the MPs are your voice in your government so please speak out.
Yours truly,
Ken Kellington,
Devon, Alberta
