Two of the track champions at the Estevan Motor Speedway needed victories in the final regular program of the year September 18 to clinch their titles.
The other track champion needed a feature win to cap the most dominant season in the track's 11-year history.
Tyson Turnbull won his first feature of the season to wrap up the modified championship. Turnbull finished with 316 points. Jim Harris was second with 301. Joren Boyce was third with 296.
Turnbull's father, Ed, won the track championship in 2001 and 2002. Tyson Turnbull's brother, Aaron, won the championship in 2007.
“My brother's been about the toughest guy out there to beat, and my Dad's still competitive, too,” said Tyson Turnbull.
He said he was pleased to finally win a feature.
“I was hungry for that. It seems like I'm always up there, and I can get the lead. I'm second or third, or in the top five pretty well every night, but I've been having trouble closing the deal,” said Turnbull.
Consistently strong finishes were an important factor in winning the championship, Turnbull said.
Turnbull dedicated the win to the memory of his friend, Tyler Fedyk, who was killed in a pit lane accident in Minot, N.D., in early September.
“It was pretty cool that his family was there (in Estevan on September 18), and that (his cousins) Kohlan and Kyle did those hot laps for him, and it was a special night,” Turnbull said. It definitely helped to get me motivated, knowing that I could win a race for Tyler.”
Rocky Alexander edged Joe Flory twice on September 18. First, he held off Flory to win the IMCA stock car feature. And he beat Flory in the points standings in what proved to be the track's tightest battle.
Alexander finished the season with 334 points. Included in the total was four feature wins. Flory was second with 328 points.
Greg Mann was third with 293 points.
Dana Brandt won the hobby stock feature for the 10th time in 11 races this year. Brandt opened the season with eight consecutive feature wins and set the track record for consecutive feature victories.
And Brandt went on to finish with 429 of a possible 440 points.
Dallas Rice finished second in the feature on September 18, and second in the overall standings, with 399 points. Gary Goudy came in third with 370 points.
The championship trophies, along with other recognitions, will be handed out during the year-end awards banquet on October 23.
